Kolathur (Tamil: கொளத்தூர் MAFM) is a district in North Chennai (formerly Madras), Tamil Nadu, South India.It is well developed area with all facilities. Nearby neighbourhoods are Vajjiravel Nagar, Perambur, Vinayagapuram, Villivakkam, Puzhal, Jawahar Nagar, Thiru-vi-ka Nagar, Sakthivel Nagar and Periyar Nagar. Kolathur is near the Grand National Trunk Road, which connects it with Kolkata (formerly Calcutta). Kolathur's population has grown quickly enough to make it a State Assembly constituency.

The Inner Ring Road also passes through Kolathur, making it one of the best-connected areas in Chennai. Via the Ring Road, one can reach Anna Nagar (10 km away) in 15 minutes. Nearby railway stations include Villivakkam and Perambur Loco Works. Kolathur's bus depot is known as Kumaran Nagar.

In Kolathur is the Ganga theater complex, which comprises three theaters: Ganga, Yamuna and Kaveri. Ganga is the main theater; the other two theaters are smaller.

Temples

The Sri Varasithi Vinayagar Temple is in Anjugam Nagar. One of the oldest temples in Anjugam Nagar is the Vetrivel Nagar Extension and Samdharaya Colony. The main deity is Kadavul Vinayagar; there are also shrines for Kadavul Murugar, Kadavul Durgai, Kadavul Anuman and the Navagraha. The temples may be reached from the Redhills High Road; buses stop at Welding Shop or the SKD Marriage Hall. It is a five-minute walk from the bus stop to the temples.

Sri Sarva Sakthi Vinayagar Temple is located in Thenpalani Nagar. The deity of Sri Ganesha in this temple is believed to be very powerful, healing all doshas. The temple is linked by road with other areas of Chennai, and is served by the Tambaram - Redhills bus routes. The temple is a five-minute walk from the Ambedkar Nagar bus stop. It is also has the accessible from Parry's Corner, with direct bus routes from Parry's to Poompuhar Nagar and Srinivasa Nagar. The nearest bus stops out of Parry's are Thenpalani Nagar or Erikkarai. The nearest railway station is Villivakkam, three km from the temple. The temple has been renovated, with new deities of Lord Shiva, Lord Dhakshinamurty and Lord Hanuman installed. The temple also has a shrine to Navagraha. The temple forms a triangle with Sree Kanniamman Temple and Sri Prasanna Venkatesa Perumal Temple the other two points, located within one km of each other. Sree Kanniamman is the local deity, especially for women (who feel a strong bond with the goddess).

Another ancient shrine in Kolathur is the temple of Sree Chandramouleeswarar. It dates back several centuries, and has a place in many Hindu scriptures. The temple had deteriorated, but has been renovated; it is managed by the government of Tamil Nadu, with private contributions. Another shrine is the Sree Agatheeswarar Temple, within walking distance of the Sree Chandramouleeswarar Temple. This temple also dates back several centuries; however, not much is known about it. Kolathur's many temples make it a popular destination for religious visitors.
